Being at the heart of our communities and evolving with the times have always been part of Maybank’s DNA.
The financial world is constantly evolving with the times, and Maybank has always been on the crest of the waves of innovation.
The same commitment to change can be seen in our golf events. Following 14 successful years of working with the European Tour and Asian Tour in co-sanctioned men’s championships, Maybank boldly went where no bank in Malaysia has gone before. In 2023, in an historic move for Malaysian golf, we partnered with the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) to create the richest ladies’ golf event in Southeast Asia.
Marking the return of the LPGA Tour to Malaysian shores after a six-year hiatus, the Maybank Championship was welcomed by the golf fraternity as a much-needed impetus for the game in the country and the region. The USD3 million Championship provided a more diverse, accessible and inclusive stage for women's golf, aiming to inspire the next generation of golfers while providing the intersection where the best-in class come together to thrive and succeed.
Fittingly, the Championship is staged at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club’s world-renowned West Course, previously the venue for high-profile men’s events including the Maybank Malaysian Open.
Inked for three years with a plus-two option, the partnership with the LPGA will help promote Malaysia and ASEAN to a global audience via the Maybank Championship’s extensive worldwide broadcast to over 560 million households.
The Maybank Championship embodies our belief that women’s golf has the potential to create positive change, both on and off the course. To further amplify regional inclusivity, a 36-hole ASEAN Qualifier was introduced in 2024, offering five coveted starts in the Championship.
The impact of the Maybank Championship was felt well beyond the fairways and greens, bringing huge economic and societal benefits to the community. In 2024, the Championship generated a total economic impact valued at more than USD20 million for the nation. Various humanising initiatives were implemented to empower players, fans, businesses and the community to immerse themselves in the Maybank Championship experience and its overlying message of inclusivity, diversity and equity.
The Maybank Championship also featured a host of sustainability initiatives with the objective of reducing the event’s carbon footprint. These included the re-use of Championship structures from 2023 to 2024, a fully-electric fleet of vehicles,, a Food Waste Management initiative with Ground Control utilising BioBIN composting technology, and a booth by Precious Plastics Malaysia where single-use plastic bottle caps were transformed into tees and ball markers.
The 2025 Maybank Championship will be played this October 30-November 2, featuring 68 professional golfers from the LPGA Tour and ten invitational players, with starts reserved for Malaysian and ASEAN talents. The no-cut, 72-hole tournament format enables each player to earn a share of the prize money, while ensuring that spectators will be able to watch their favourite stars in action from start to finish.
