Maybank’s golf events were used to introduce the numerous facets of the Group to the public, from our various businesses and services to the community empowerment activities of the Maybank Foundation.
Golf is one of the few sports that enables event owners to engage directly with the public, providing the necessary space, time and opportunity to do so in a relaxed and casual environment.
With its huge footfall, the Maybank Championship furnished the perfect platform to introduce the Maybank’s various businesses and consumer services, as well the Group’s community empowerment activities, in a fun and engaging manner.
Among the community initiatives showcased during the Maybank Championship was the Maybank Women Eco-Weavers, a regional endeavour that aims to preserve and support the traditional art of textile weaving. Operating in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos and Malaysia, the programme is designed to enrich and promote traditional woven textiles in a sustainable and inclusive manner.
The Reach Independence & Sustainable Entrepreneurship (R.I.S.E.) booth educated visitors on how Maybank is impacting livelihoods by empowering people with disabilities and the marginalised to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Spectators were able to view and purchase products from the programme participants.
MaybankHeart, an online platform that enables NGOs and charitable bodies to raise funds for projects that benefit communities in need, was also highlighted during our tournaments. During Saturday’s third round of the 2024 Maybank Championship, players and spectators were encouraged to don yellow to champion the Heart2Heart cause, a mission to provide life-saving treatments for paediatric heart patients for underserved children in the ASEAN region.
In 2019, the MaybankHeart platform was used to raise funds for the nationwide junior programme run by Malaysian professional Shaaban Hussin, who lost his left leg in a motorcycle accident in 2016. A former Maybank ambassador, Shaaban was present at the MaybankHeart booth to meet fans and sign copies of his book, “Shaaban Hussin – Jatuh Bangun Seorang Juara (The Rise & Fall of a Champion).”
The Maybank Championship also served as a global stage to highlight Malaysia and ASEAN’s rich heritage, by featuring traditional dances and performances during key events such as the Honorary Tee-Off, Welcome Party and Prize-Giving Ceremony. The Maybank Foundation supports the KataKatha initiative which aims to achieve a mutual understanding of the shared history, culture and traditions of ASEAN countries.
